The 12 Jyotirlingas – Radiant Pillars of Lord Shiva’s Energy |
How the 12 Jyotirlingas Formed ?
A long time ago, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma were engaged in a dispute about who was the supreme deity. To resolve their argument, Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite beam of divine light known as 'the Jyoti Stambha'.
He challenged both gods to find either the top or bottom of this endless radiance.
Lord Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upwards.
Lord Vishnu transformed into a boar (Varaha) and went downward.
After searching for long, Vishnu accepted his defeat with humility, whereas Brahma falsely claimed that he found the top, using a Ketaki flower as fake proof.
Lord Shiva, angered by the lie, emerged from the Jyoti Stambha and cursed Brahma, saying he would never be widely worshipped in temples and he blessed Lord Vishnu for his truthfulness and modesty.
Thus, the Jyotirling represents the formless, eternal light of Lord Shiva, and the places where this energy manifested on Earth became sacred Jyotirlinga shrines.
